TENS

Clinical Applications in Dogs

1. Acute Paraspinal Hyperesthesia (Spinal Pain)

A 2025 prospective, blinded, controlled clinical trial published in Frontiers in Pain Research evaluated TENS as an adjunctive therapy in 818 dogs with thoracolumbar acute hyperesthesia (spinal pain, often associated with intervertebral disc disease). Key findings:

2. Quadriceps Contracture

A 2025 case study investigated TENS combined with low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and therapeutic ultrasound in 6 dogs and 1 cat with quadriceps muscle contracture—a condition where the knee joint becomes stiff and painful, often following orthopedic surgery. Results were highly promising:

  • Significant relief was observed by the end of week 1

  • Knee joint range of motion began to increase within the first week

  • By week 3, animals regained functional use of the limb

  • No surgical intervention was required for any case

This study demonstrates TENS as an effective component of multimodal physical therapy for muscle contractures, potentially preventing the need for amputation—a risk in severe cases.

3. Osteoarthritis (Mixed Evidence)

Research on TENS for canine osteoarthritis is divided. A 2024 randomized single-blinded cross-over study in 15 dogs with OA found no significant differences between TENS and placebo for gait parameters (stance time, stride length, peak vertical force, etc.). However, another 2024 study from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences similarly found no significant differences in clinical pain exams, owner-reported pain scores, or physical activity levels compared to placebo. These mixed results highlight the need for further, larger-scale studies.

Note: Despite limited evidence, TENS is widely used in practice for pain management, and some individual case reports suggest positive outcomes.

Massage

Key Study: Canine Massage for Pain and Quality of Life

A 2021 cross-sectional study of 527 dogs (from 65 practitioners’ case notes) examined the effects of clinical canine massage on pain indicators and quality of life.

Study Limitations: This was not a double-blind trial and lacked a control group. However, the authors suggested massage may be a valid treatment for myofascial and musculoskeletal pain from muscular injuries, arthritis, and other orthopedic conditions .

Study: Physiotherapy Including Massage for Canine Osteoarthritis

A 2024 randomized controlled trial in dogs with hip osteoarthritis compared a physiotherapy program (including massage, electrophysical modalities, and exercises) combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) injections versus HA alone.

Between-group comparisons showed all changes were statistically improved in the physiotherapy group compared to control (p = 0.042, p = 0.010, p = 0.028, p = 0.015). The study concluded physiotherapy is beneficial and safe for treating canine OA .

Research for Cats

Research specifically on feline massage is extremely limited. The 2022 systematic review included very few feline studies, and systematic reviews on the topic for cats remain scarce. Some clinical observations and review articles suggest potential benefits for stress reduction and pain relief in cats, but scientific data supporting these effects is still lacking .

Critical Safety Risks

Cats Are at Special Risk

Cats are deficient in glucuronyl transferase, an enzyme critical for metabolizing phenolic compounds found in many essential oils. This makes them extremely sensitive to essential oil toxicity. Their grooming behavior places them at additional risk from both dermal and oral exposure.

Music Therapy

Note: Music therapy is a promising, low-risk non-pharmacological tool for reducing stress and anxiety in dogs and cats, particularly in clinical and surgical settings. However, the scientific evidence base is still developing, with significant methodological limitations in existing studies. Music should be used as a complementary approach alongside proper veterinary care, not as a replacement for medical treatment, especially in severe anxiety cases. Research on cats remains particularly sparse, and caution should be exercised when extrapolating canine findings to felines.

A Note on Cats

Historically, cats have been excluded from hydrotherapy due to assumptions about water aversion. However, this perception is being challenged by new research. A feline-specific aquatic rehabilitation protocol published in Applied Animal Behavior Science demonstrates that cats can successfully participate in underwater treadmill therapy

Clinical Success: In a study of 12 cats, all completed the underwater treadmill portion of their program with no dropouts. Cats that preferred play as reinforcement showed markedly fewer stress signs than those preferring food (RR ≈ 0.19, p = 0.01). Case reports include cats with FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism) regaining function after a program including hydrotherapy

Accupunture

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) that involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to produce therapeutic effects . Veterinary acupuncture is increasingly practiced at teaching hospitals and clinics in the US and abroad, with demand growing over the past 20 years . In addition to traditional needle insertion, other forms include electroacupuncture (adding electrical stimulation), aqua-acupuncture (injecting substances like vitamin B12 into points), and laser acupuncture

Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy, more precisely termed photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level laser therapy (LLLT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function, reduce pain, and promote healing in dogs and cats .
